Folklorama: New Zealand/Australia Pavilions
Pavilion Objectives
The objectives of the New Zealand/Australia Folklorama pavilion are:
- to showcase and promote, in a professional, entertaining and fun manner, the arts, culture, music and dance of New Zealand and Australia to all visitors to the pavilion, and
- to celebrate the New Zealand / Australia community living in Winnipeg and Manitoba
History
1993, 1994: The Early Years
The DUCW first participated in Folklorama in 1993 and then again in 1994. Both years were a great success, attracting more than 10,000 people each time. Along with an array of Aussie and Kiwi treats and souvenirs, the band 'Australis' from Toronto performed a variety of Australian songs.
1997: Our 50th Anniversary
We celebrated our 50th anniversary by staging our third pavilion. For the first time, there was both Australian and New Zealand entertainment, including songs, dances and indigenous performances from both countries, with all the musicians and performers from Winnipeg. We had an unexpected support from down under, with many companies and individuals sending us items for sale, distribution and display. Our previous pavilions were so popular that some of our members were invited to perform in the opening ceremony in 1997 and live on television. As a direct result of Folklorama 1997, several members have since performed at other events with great success.
